So you want to moe-ify your desktop...
So, you probably saw all of those cute desktops people have online, and wanna make your own, but you have no idea where to start! Or maybe you already have one, but you wanna improve it a little. Fear not, because I've assembled this handly little list to help you! :D
trust me, i would know a thing or two. (right click > open image in new tab to see the true scope of my madness)
The main thing you wanna focus on when making a moe desktop is maximalism. It's all about cramming in as much stuff that you like as you can! It also usually relies on 2000s aesthetics. You can really just go wild with it. It's all about creativity! If you're stuck, think of your favorite character, and try to make a desktop based around them!
Also, this guide is mainly written with Windows 10/11 in mind. I'm sure a lot of this stuff will work on other versions, since these are ancient programs, but keep this in mind!
You don't gotta use ALL of these, obviously, but having some of these is what will take your desktop from normal to moe-bombed!
Rainmeter - If you're on my site, you probably have this. If you don't, then this is a must have. It's what lets you use all of those cute little widgets people make! This program has been around since the year of our lord 2001, so there's a ton of realllllyyy old rainmeter skins out there that should still work!
Rainlendar - Like Rainlendar, but for calendars. You can also set alarms or keep a to do list.
Retrobar -A program for Windows 10 and 11 that lets you change your taskbar to older ones! It's highly customizable, with a ton of cute skins made for it. It's a must have, especially if you're suffering with the Win11 taskbar.
Ukagaka - Interactive desktop mascots that you can talk with. You ever seen those anime girls that look like they were drawn in the early 2000s at the bottom of peoples screens? There's a good chance it was one of these. This program has been out since 2001, so just like rainmeter, there's a ton of ancient ghosts (what the mascots are called) that you can use.
WinAmp - A music/MP3 player from the late 90s with countless anime skins made for it. Really cool looking AND easy to use. Stop using spotify, people! (Or just download it cause it's cute, lol)
Shimeji - Cute little desktop pets that can walk around on the bottom of your screen. You can also download it as a browser extension.
ExplorerBGtool - A program that lets you put an image in the background of your file explorer.
